For 21 years, West Egg Cafe served as one of Atlanta’s signature breakfast and brunch destinations before closing in 2024. The establishment occupied a site in Atlanta’s Westside Provisions District, drawing customers from the adjacent Midtown, Georgia Tech, and Atlantic Station neighborhoods with a menu rooted in Southern comfort cooking and seasonal ingredients.
Jennifer and Ben Johnson, former attorneys, founded the cafe in 2004. Chef Andrew Smith joined in 2015, contributing nearly 20 years of culinary experience that included prior work under notable Atlanta chefs David Berry and Scott Peacock. The kitchen’s approach centered on fresh, seasonal sourcing, producing dishes such as shrimp and grits with andouille sausage and roasted okra, a build-your-own biscuit menu starting around $3, and a full bar program. Breakfast was served all day alongside lunch, with weekend brunch available throughout the run.
In addition to the main dining room, the venue maintained a separate coffee shop with lounge seating, a walk-up counter for baked goods, and locally-roasted Kaldi’s Coffee. Free Wi-Fi was available throughout. The space was also rented for private events including rehearsal dinners and corporate gatherings.
The cafe accumulated recognition over its two decades. Published accolades included a “Best Shrimp & Grits in Georgia” award from the Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits Festival and features in Thrillist’s “Best Breakfast Spots in America” list. Atlanta Magazine, Creative Loafing, and Southern Living each covered the restaurant.
Following the closure, the property’s photobooth relocated to Wood’s Chapel BBQ. Chef Andrew Smith transitioned to The General Muir. The founding partners, Jennifer and Ben Johnson and Shelley Sweet, remain active in Atlanta’s restaurant industry through Rye Restaurants, which operates The General Muir, TGM Bread, Fred’s Meat & Bread, Yalla, and Wood’s Chapel BBQ across the metro.
