A studio on Gaskill Street near Grant Park in Downtown Atlanta is the base of operations for George Berry, a custom furniture designer and architectural woodworker with formal training spanning two institutions: a Fine Arts degree in Interior Design from Georgia State University earned in 1975 and a Master of Fine Arts in Woodworking and Furniture Design from Rochester Institute of Technology completed in 1979.
The studio serves both commercial and residential clients, producing individually designed furniture pieces, architectural woodworking installations, and antique restoration and conservation projects. Commercial work has reached notable institutions, including the Catholic Church on the Georgia Tech campus, Penta Hotel, Hewlett Packard Southeastern Sales Center, Underground Atlanta, Lakeside Center, Decatur Town Center, and the State Bar of Georgia.
Berry’s custom pieces have earned national recognition, including a “Best in Show” award at the Lincoln Center Festival of the Arts. The New York Times has called him “a first-rate artist,” and architect Richard Meier praised his cabinets as “the handsomest I have ever seen.” His professional credentials include service as millwork consultant to IBM and the Federal Court of Appeals, and qualification as an expert witness in Fulton Superior Court.
Materials used in the studio include Brazilian rosewood, black walnut, and bonded plywood, with each commission individually designed rather than drawn from standard catalog templates. The design process begins with a site visit charged at $150, followed by a design fee of $750 that is credited toward the final commission price.
